On Correcting People

There’s a blind man casually strolling down the sidewalk and you’re at the end of your driveway getting the mail. You see that he’s walking directly towards an open manhole cover, showing no signs of awareness of it. Most sentient humans would call out to the man and warn him about the danger, effectively CORRECTING his belief that there was no danger.

You would correct the blind man because you wished to HELP him - to save him, even. Why, then, is it so different when someone posts on facebook about their support of one issue or another, and I point out to them factual evidence to the contrary? I don’t want to appear smarter, or berate them in any way; I want to HELP them by CORRECTING their error in perceiving things to be a certain way when, in fact, they are not.

When I read a status saying “OMG your so stupid,” I CORRECT their apparent misunderstanding of a word’s meaning in order to HELP them communicate more effectively in the future.

Yet it always feels like I’m starting a fight.

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.
